Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of  the course students should have acquired the following:
- Understand the processes involved in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management Systems (MS) and be able to recognize hazardous waste
Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative MSW characteristics and ability to calculate pertinent parameters
- An ability to calculate and/or estimate basic design parameters for collection, transfer, treatment and disposal of MSW
-
A deep understanding of environmental impacts concerning MSWMS and ways to minimize them

- A thorough overview of pertinent legislation and MSW management authorities

Topics per Week:

The course introduces undergraduate students to basic concepts and methodological tools needed for understanding processes involved in solid waste management with particular emphasis on MSW. Weekly lectures and assignments cover the following topics:
-Municipal Solid Waste Management Systems: Strategic and tactical decision in  
strategic and tactical waste management decisions. Categories of MSW and hazardous waste.
-MSW Generation: Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of MSW. Determination of MSW composition.
-Storage, collection and transfer of MSW: Analysis of required equipment, time and personnel. Transfer stations.
-MSW treatment processes, recovery of energy and materials: Physical, chemical and biological processes (aerobic and anaerobic).
-Final disposal of MSW: Disposal methods. Principles of design, construction and operation of controlled landfills. Biogas and leachate management. Monitoring of operation. Reclamation of finished landfills.
-Planning of MSW landfills: Calculation of pertinent parameters. Siting methodology. Environmental impact assessment.
-Planning of MSWMS: Upgrading methodology. Relevant legislation and management authorities for both MSW and hazardous waste

Homework assignments every two weeks (final grade equal to weighted average of all assignments) or written three hours examination covering the entire course content at the end of the semester.
