AEGEAS - Astronaut photograph Exploitation by integrating them into
an object-oriented GEographical Analysis and mapping System
-
The
Aegean Archipelago has attracted the interest of Geographers and Cartographers
from the beginning of the 15th century. The reason why this unique area
of our planet, the Aegean Archipelago, concentrates the interest of
earth scientists is very simple. It is the result of the tectonic activity
through the geological periods that formed this exceptional and well-known
island complex. Santorini, Nisyros, Lesvos and Milos islands are some
of the most impressive tectonic-volcanic islands of the world..
The aims of the AEGEAS proposal are:
1. To reveal the importance of exploiting EO-data, at multiple scales,
by integrating them into an object-oriented GIS environment with ancillary
information such as: Digital Elevation Models, drainage network, geological
maps, tectonic maps etc for assisting geological and tectonic activity
analysis and mapping and
2. To contribute to a better understanding of the formation and diachronic
evolution processes of the Aegean archipelago islands

HERO(DOT) eNews, European environmental news
-
Hero(dot)eNews
aims at fostering cooperation between European learning communities.
By the means of interactive and cooperative creation of an Online-journal
treating environmental and economic issues, teachers, students and pupils
from the partner countries and all over Europe will be enabled to exchange
information, ideas and opinions on e-themes. Hero(dot)eNews seeks to
bridge European schools, universities and teacher education by acting
as a forum for national and international communication about environmental
news.
The target groups for the project will be teachers and pupils in
schools together with lecturers and students in initial teacher education
institutions. In the Hero(dot)eNews forum, students and teachers will
be initiated to foster their own consciousness and responsibility
for environmental and economic topics in close contact with both the
surrounding society and international peer groups in multimedia-based
workspaces. The issues in Geography, Biology, History, and Chemistry
will become an integrated wholeness when students and teachers search
and select news from mass media, solve problems, communicate with
each other and evaluate processes and products. More...

- ICAROS-NET - Integrated Computational Assessment via Remote Earth
Observation System Network
-
ICAROS
NET aims at the development and demonstration of a networked interactive
computational environment that allows the integration and fusion of
environmental information from remote sensing observations, ground air
quality measurements, and pollution transport models in order to minimize
uncertainty in decision-making regarding operational air pollution control
and abatement. The goal is to maximize cost-effectiveness of urban management,
increase the reliability of environmental monitoring and enhance quality
of life in European cities. This telematic network will be applicable
to on-line monitoring of air quality and atmospheric incidents alert
at the regional and urban scales; it will also support the harmonisation
of air quality management in the EU. More...
- ICAROS - Integrated Computational Assessment via Remote Earth
Observation System
-
The
aim of this methodological research project is the assimilation of the
three data sources (in situ measurements, Earth observation and simulation
modelling) to develop links between the three basic data types through
an open-ended integrated computational environment. More...
- GeoBASE - Professional training in fundamentals of Geographical
Information Systems (GIS)
-
GeoBASE
develops a basic GIS introduction prototype course with a standardized
European certificate made available to all customers of the involved
training institutions on a regular basis. Main customer groups are workers
from SME's, public administration as well as unemployed people seeking
re-qualification.
Consortium partners come from Austria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy,
Netherlands, and Spain.

- GEO.NET Project
-
GEO.NET
aims to promote the use of Geographical Information (GI) over the Internet!
Using the Internet's user interface, the World Wide Web (WWW), to deal
with 'Geographical' questions requires advanced techniques which are
only now becoming available to the online community. GEO.NET primarily
addresses school, students and teachers. We feel this is an efficient
way to get the word out, to tell as many people as possible that the
world of geographical information is changing. Paper maps, atlases and
other 'static' spatial media are going the way of the phone book and
postal letter, they are increasingly supplemented and replaced by interactive
online media. GEO.NET attempts to provide an educational opportunity
for everybody who needs to work with.

- Seismic-safety planning in an island context: The case of Chios,
Kos and Nissyros Islands
-
The
aim of the project was to draft guidelines for seismic safety planning
for island regions. The project was focused on the Aegean Archipelagos
and the islands of Chios, Kos and Nissyros were investigated as case
studies.
The Aegean Archipelago is composed by more than 1000 islands, which
immensely vary in terms of their size, geomorphology, structural geology,
seismicity, demography, built environment, urbanisation and development
patterns. This clearly poses the need of a diversified seismic safety
planning rationale, more or less on a case-to-case basis. In other words,
it is strongly believed here that the study of the Aegean island setting,
under this analytical and policy perspective is of a significance that
exceeds local-regional boundaries and assumes an international relevance.
- Terraced lands for agriculture in mountainous areas: a pilot project
in the islands of NE Aegean
-
Man-made
terraces meant for agricultural use are found in the whole Aegean archipelago
since ancient times. In a research, having the character of a pilot
study, we tried to make an holistic approach, considering the characteristics
of both the physical and the social environment. We focused on 23 islands
of the SE Aegean (21 within the Dodecanese complex and two in the Cycladic
one). The basic question was how land was managed so that stony slopes
were transformed into arable land, and how this management evolved with
time until nowadays.
- Investigation of the possible application of the chromostereoscopic
method in the 3-dimensional illustration of geographical data. Pilotic
application in Lesvos Island, Greece.
-
The aim of the project was to investigate the application
of the Chromo-Stereoscopic Method for the cartographic 3D visualisation
of geographical data. The method was applied into Lesvos Island, Greece
and resulted to the creation of several Chromostereoscopic Maps.
- International promotion of the National History Museum of the Petrified
Forest of Lesvos via the Internet.
-
The
aim of the project was the development of the WWW-site for the International
promotion of the National History Museum of the Petrified Forest of
Lesvos via the Internet
- Modernization, improvement of siting and extention of the air pollution
- monitoring stations of the PERPA network in Athens by a new method
of analysis of high spatial resolution satellite imagery.
-
The
aim of the project was to investigate the possible improvement of siting
and extention of the air pollution - monitoring stations of the PERPA
network in Athens by the exploitation of high spatial resolution satellite
imageries.
