The Program
The Department of Social Anthropology and History organizes and runs
a two-year Program of Postgraduate Studies entitled Social and
Historical Anthropology, according to the provisions of the Law
2083/92. The operation of the Program began in the academic year
2001-2002 and focuses on the interdisciplinary study of contemporary
and historical societies and cultural systems from the viewpoint of
social and historical anthropology.
The two-year cycle of courses constitutes a field of intensive
preparation in the basic areas of contemporary social and historical
anthropology, while simultaneously trains students in the
ethnography and social history of the wider Greek, Balkan, and
Mediterranean area. During the summer following the second semester
of their studies, students are obliged to engage in summer practice.
At the beginning of the third semester, students choose their major
among the two disciplines offered by the Program. Requirement
towards graduation from the Program is an M.A. thesis, the topic for
which is chosen and then outlined during the fourth semester, and
should be composed in a period of no longer than one semester beyond
the fourth.
University graduates from Greece and from abroad and of all
specialties of Humanities, Social Sciences, as well as the Exact
Sciences may be admitted to our Postgraduate Program. The attendance
of the courses does not presuppose any specialized knowledge in
Social Anthropology or History. Following the publication of the
relevant announcement in the daily press, and according to its
content, candidates submit to the Department an application for
participation in the admission examinations and a curriculum vitae.
Applicants are examined in at least one of the two foreign languages
primarily represented in the literature pertaining to the
Postgraduate Program (i.e. English and French). They are also
examined in writing on topics deriving from a selected bibliography,
which is provided to them in due course by the Department Secretary.
Finally, candidates are also required to participate in an
interview.
Students are obliged to attend the lectures and seminars of the
postgraduate courses as these are defined in the Program. Our
postgraduate courses usually combine lectures with the development
of certain topics in the form of a seminar. The exact cycle of
lectures and seminars and the suggested bibliography are specified
in the course description. Postgraduate students are evaluated
according to their oral participation, the seminars they present,
and the written papers they elaborate on in each course.
Graduates of the program are entitled to submit a proposal for a
Ph.D. dissertation in the Department, which, pending approval,
allows the Ph.D. candidate to work towards obtaining a Ph.D. degree.
During the period of the relevant research there is regular
co-operation between the research student and a supervisor. The
final evaluation of the dissertation is carried out by a
seven-member committee consisting of the supervisor, other members
of the advisory committee, and two other members of the same or
another University and of the same or another closely related
scholarly speciality.
The excellent operation of the Program of Postgraduate Studies is
guaranteed by the long experience of the Department in providing
postgraduate courses. The great importance we attribute to them is
substantiated also by the fact that the operation of our
postgraduate studies in 1987-1988 preceded the undergraduate program
of studies.
