PRO.O.DO.S.
A complete intervention on the part of the University of the Aegean to eliminate the isolation that troubles the islands of the Northern

Seen from the economic point of view, the fact that there are thousands of small businesses scattered on so many islands in the Aegean and taking into account today’s jeographical and political conditions, as well as the fact that our tourism is getting restricted, we see that it is essential to take advantage of the modern possibilities of Telematics in order to eliminate the isolation of the area and to promote its political cohesion and integration.

The system named PRO.O.DO.S. (Model Integrated Pilot System) is a significant intervention on the part of 1he University of the Aegean towards this aim and includes the development of a multi-media network consisting of 17 units on the islands:

Lesvos, Lemnos, Chios, Samos and Ikaria, which will be interconnected with one another. It also includes 3 centres of entrepreneurial Tele- collaboration and Telework that will be established on the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos.
The whole system is also connected with INTERNET and provides a series of important services such as the following:

  • Basic tourist information.

It provides specialised information on alternative forms of tourism with emphasis being placed on cultural tourism, pleasure craft tourism, home tourism and religious tourism.

  • The possibility to organise holidays and trips in the area.
  • The possibility of a global projection and promotion of the local products of the islands as well as of the businesses that produce and sell these products.

- The possibility of an entrepreneurial co-operation and telework through the 3 centres established on the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos.

The system PRO.O.DO.S., an acronym which in Greek can be read to mean “PROGRESS”, was financed by the Ministry of the Aegean and was materialized by a research team from the Department of Business Aministration of the Univercity of the Aegean.
