The UNESCO Peace Festival for Children
An international festival was held in Chios on the occasion of the-50 years’ anniversary since the founding of UNESCO and the cele4ration of the Universal Year for Tolerance.
About 50 children from Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Rumania, Turkey, Cyprus and Greece, escorted by their teachers, participated in these events.
The aim of’ this international children’s festival were the following:
to propagate the mersage of Peace and Tolerance to the young and to give the children motivation to undertake specific initiatives in their own societies; to contribute’to the development and realization of an educational programme for the promotion of peace; to give the children the opportunity to get to know the culture and promblemr of the neighbouring countries; through playing to help the children adopt a message of peace that will travel from all the participating countries to UNESCO’s headquarters.
The ginister of the Aegean, Mr Antony Cotsakas, attended and addressed the international children’s festival and addressed his greetings.
The Second General Director of UNESCO, Mr Lourdes Arizpe, with a letter addressed to the co- ordinator of the programme “The Aegean Archipelagos”, Member of Parliament and Professor, Mr K.M. Sophoulis, expressed the positive response of UNESCO’s fields of Education, Science and
UNESCO expressed their interest in fouding UNESCO headquarters in the University of the Aegean, Its objective will be the administrative and professional upgrading of the University’s teaching staff.
In this proposal emphasis is being placed on the fact that such headquarters may be developed into a crossroads for scientific exchanges with the neighbouring countries and the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean in particular.
2nd UNIVERSAL MEETING OF CHIANS LIVING ABROAD
UÍESCO’s Generaf Conference
The Association of Chians who come from Cardamyla and have emigrated to the U.S.A., successfully organised the 2nd UNIVERSAL MEETING OF CHIANS LIVING ABROAD at the Homerian Cultural Centre of Chios. The meeting was held between the 10th and 13th of August under the auspices of the United Chian Associations of the U,S.A, and Canada.

The procecdings of the plenary session of UNESCO will start in Paris on the 25th of October and will end at the same place on the 16th of November with the celebration of the 50th anninersary from the Foundation of the United Nations, The subject that will be dealt with at this conference are among others the following:
Sciences in the service of development, Environmental Sciences and continual development, Cultural development: heritage and creativity, communication and information.
The programme ”The Aegean Archipelagos” is participating within its interests in the formation of the essential interventions which will be expressed during the conference on behalf of Greece.
