A GREEK – ORTHODOX CULTURE IN THE AEGEAN

The programme “THE AEGEAN ARCHIPELAGOS” in co-operation with the Monstery of Patmos have taken interest in participating in the programme ”Memory of the World” which is supported by UNESCO.

This proposal is about the creation of a network for the collection, recording, conservation and propagation of rare material by using Computer Information Systems and telecommunication nerworks. This rare material includes written documents, works of art, manuscripts etc. 1hat have been collected during the Byzantine and Greek- Orthodox periods.

After a series of contacts, a group of interested institutes has been formed who can undertake the project in a piloting phase before it is hroadened to acquire a universal character.

The institutes that have been selected and have accepted to participate in the piloting phase of this project are the follo wing:

 

The Monastery of Patmos, the Institute of Slavobyzantine Studies “Ivan Doitsev” in Sofia, the Institute of Manuscripts in the Patriarchate of Georgia and the Institute for the Conservation of Books which has its head offices in Paris.

H.E. Stylianos of Australia about the project:
After being informed about the Aegean Archipelagos project, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Australia H.E. Stylianos, responded to the co-ordinator of~the Project as follows:

I am deeply moved by the information that has been sent to me about the Aegean Archipelagos and I have already started studying it in my spare time.

It is indeed a God sent concept and I thank you for your having kept me informed about it.

3rd INTERNATIONAL LYRE MEETING

A traditional collection of articles of furniture and other objects named “THE AEGEAÍ” was created in accordance to the “Aegean Conscience” and the “Aegean Aesthetics”.

Samples of items of furniture and other objects collected from all parts of the Aegean have been adjusted to meet modern needs. Special care was taken to conserve their particular morphological features and practicality.

The innovator was George Pittas, owner of the Furniture Industry bearing the same name, located in Athens, 137 Irakhou Avenue, Iraklio.

The programme named “MELINA” aims at promoting the cultural field in education and at revitalising the everyday school activities through the imperishable power of Art and Culture.

The experimental application of this programme has already started in the new academic year 1995-96.

From the Aegean the following schools are participating:
1st Primary School of Ialyssos, Rhodes, 1st School of Symi, Symi.
4th School of Ermoupolis, Syros.
1st School of Naxos, Naxos and
5th School of Mytilini, Lesvos.

The Institute of Kassian Studies successfully organised the 3rd international meeting for the lyre and other traditiona1 instruments played with a bow.(in Athens and Kassos on the 7th of June and 20th of August accordingly).

Twelve musicians from the islands of Kassos, Crete, Lemnos and the Black Sea playing the lyre,the lute,the tabor, the dulcimer and the bagpipes, played traditional music, sang and exchanged folk couplets, tunes and experiences.

The island of Kassos with its remarkable historical signi- ficance, as sung by Homer, has much to offer in music, poetry, folk couplets and lyre playing.
