Objectives

The Department of Social Anthropology and History of the University of the Aegean offers a Postgraduate Studies Program entitled Women and Gender: Anthropological and Historical Approaches, which awards a Master of Arts (MA) degree.

The Program’s objective is to advance the level of education of scientists and researchers who specialize in Women and Gender Studies, in order to be in a position to respond to the need of today’s multicultural societies by promoting the principle of equality on the basis of otherness in all domains.  The Program is interdisciplinary and combines Social Anthropology and History, as well as these disciplines’ articulation with a series of other related disciplines such as Economics, Political Philosophy, Socio-linguistics, and Art.  An additional innovation characterizing the Program concerns its theoretical and methodological approaches, which facilitate linkages between the knowledge obtained from the study of non-western societies and cultures on gender issues and the respective dialogue developed in Greece over the same issues.  Consequently, the elements distinguishing this Program are its interdisciplinary character, deriving from the interdisciplinary orientation of the Department of Social Anthropology and History to which it belongs, as well as the emphasis on qualitative research methods and particularly on the ethnographic approach.
